Birding Back Bay in Newport Beach

We went to Back Bay in Newport Beach in hopes of finding a California Gnatcatcher. We settled for a Common yellowthroat, several Say's Phoebe, and many hummingbirds.

Hummingbird at the bubbler

We installed a new bubbler fountain, mainly so we could enjoy the sound. As a bonus, the birds found it, and enjoy cooling off in it.

Birds at the birdbath

Hawk at the Birdbath

Allen's Hummingbird at the Birdbath

It's been hot, so we've had lots of birds coming to the birdbath. The hawk and the hummingbird are rare visitors to the birdbath.

Sweet Pea: The Hummingbird Fledgling

Hummingbird Fledgling

Chris found a hummingbird fledgling on our driveway. The high winds might have blown it out of its nest. It was pretty good at flapping its wings, but the tail feathers might have been a little too short for flight on a windy day. She couldn't find the nest so she moved it to a branch of a nearby tree and named it "Sweet Pea." After a while, the mother came over, checked on it and fed it. It stayed overnight, and we saw the mother near it in the morning. It was gone by noon and we hope it flew off when the winds died down.

Saturday's Hummingbird Photos

Saturday's Hummingbird Photos

We are not sure how much longer it will be until the baby hummingbirds fly off, but we are enjoying watching them grow.

Allen's Hummingbird on Nest

We've seen a few hummingbird nests on our property and we are following this one closely since it's visible through a window.

Mike set up the camera on a tripod about 20 feet away and then uses a remote control to take photos from inside without disturbing the nest.

If all goes well, we hope to see a baby or two within the next ten days or so.

Hummingbird

We bought a new home and have begun remodeling it. Right now HGTV has priority over Animal Planet in our lives, but we can do some birding from our new yard.

Here's a hummingbird from our garden.

Hummingbird Nest

We encountered this nest during a shopping excursion. We aren't sure if the two "bumps" in the back are wings or baby hummingbirds. We did see but not photograph the babies when the parent was away.

We were visiting Riverside, CA and stopped by the botanical garden. We saw a few birds and will have to visit again when we have more time.
